did anybody know what is the world best martial arts?
E.G
wing chun shaolin kung fu, MMA , take kown do, jijutusu . may thai , shotokan karate, okinawa karate,
ninjutsu etc. if any body know so please tell me which is the best martial arts in the whole world. my email address is (dey.ashok@yahoo.co.in)
there is no best, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses, although my personal favorite is bjj along with judo- they work really well together- also muay thai kickboxing is an extremely good martial art for stand up- and wing chun for self defense is not a good idea- unless you become so good that you can teach it- then yes but if it goes to the ground (like a lot of street fights do) then you’re screwed

Live Through This $7.02 This whole album is filled with scathing fury, mostly directed at the impossible situation that confronts women when they are asked to be both wild sources of pleasure and unblemished mother figures. Live Through This uses the same recipe of punk and metal wrapped around pop melodies that made Nirvana so captivating, but Hole uses the methodology in a more conventional manner. The metal ingredient… |

Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ $7.31 The voice is mellifluous, thick and soulful as hell; it seems to have time-traveled straight from a hot summer night in 1971. The songs are a funky retro soul with modern touches; the obvious nods to jazz, reggae and gospel never sound forced or cheesy. The sound is uncluttered, propelled by crisp beats that are the most modern thing here; damn, the whole thing just makes you want to dance in the … |

Ingres Then, and Now $33.95 Ingres Then, and Now is an innovative study of one of the best-known French artists of the nineteenth century, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Adam Rifkin reevaluates Ingres’ work in the context of a variety of literary, musical and visual cultures which are normally seen as alien to him.Rifkin offers insightful interpretations of Ingres’ early work, and follows the artist’s image in the popular cultures of the twentieth century. Approaching Ingres’ paintings as symptomatic of the commodity cultures of nineteenth-century Paris, he draws the artist away from his familiar association with the Academy and the Salon, and instead situates Ingres in the world of the Parisian Arcades. Finally, the book examines Ingres’ importance for the great French art critic Jean Cassou, and makes a bold, contemporary gay appropriation of his work. Ingres Then, and Now transforms the popular image we have of Ingres. Rifkin argues that the figure of the artist is neither fixed in time or place–there is neither an essential man named Ingres, nor a singular body of his work–but rather is an effect of many complex and overlapping historical forces. Lavishly illustrated with over 50 images, this compelling study will transform our understanding of Ingres and his cultural impact. |

‘Written In Stone’ Limestone Art Collection $49 Distressed typography printed onto natural solid limestone. Because of the natural raw beauty of stone, each artwork is completely unique. The natural limestone has a warm, creamy colour. The limestone has been tumbled (this is a process by which stone is vibrated with smaller abrasives to produce an aged appearance). The result is a lovely rough pitted surface with broken, rounded edges and corners. Dimensions: 40cm x 20cm x 1.2cm. There are three prints in the ‘Written In Stone’ collection:- ‘Baby Gaga’ – the perfect present for new parents. ‘Wedded Bliss’ – would make an excellent wedding gift. ‘Midlife Crisis’ – a great birthday gift (particularly for a 40th). ‘Baby Gaga’ “Babies are such a nice way to start people. Children reinvent your world for you. Having a child is surely the most beautifully irrational act that two people in love can commit. There are three reasons for breast-feeding: the milk is always at the right temperature; it comes in attractive containers; and the cat can’t get it. Babies are always more trouble than you thought… and more wonderful. A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for. A baby is a loud noise at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other. The worst feature of a new baby is its mother’s singing. Even when freshly washed and relieved of all obvious confections, children tend to be sticky. A crying baby is the best form of birth control. People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one. Making the decision to have a baby — it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body.” ‘Wedded Bliss’ “The more you invest in a marriage, the more valuable it becomes. Men who have a pierced ear are better prepared for marriage. They’ve experienced pain and bought jewelle… |

A Bull of a Man: Images of Masculinity, Sex, and the Body in Indian Buddhism $47.5 The androgynous, asexual Buddha of contemporary popular imagination stands in stark contrast to the muscular, virile, and sensual figure presented in Indian Buddhist texts. In early Buddhist literature and art, the Buddha’s perfect physique and sexual prowess are important components of his legend as the world’s “ultimate man.” He is both the scholarly, religiously inclined brahman and the warrior ruler who excels in martial arts, athletic pursuits, and sexual exploits. The Buddha effortlessly performs these dual roles, combining his society’s norms for ideal manhood and creating a powerful image taken up by later followers in promoting their tradition in a hotly contested religious marketplace. In this groundbreaking study of previously unexplored aspects of the early Buddhist tradition, John Powers skillfully adapts methodological approaches from European and North American historiography to the study of early Buddhist literature, art, and iconography, highlighting aspects of the tradition that have been surprisingly invisible in earlier scholarship. The book focuses on the figure of the Buddha and his monastic followers to show how they were constructed as paragons of masculinity, whose powerful bodies and compelling sexuality attracted women, elicited admiration from men, and convinced skeptics of their spiritual attainments. |

A Game to Love: In Celebration of Tennis $40 A Game to Love is the stunning publishing debut of award-winning sports photographer Mike Powell. Featuring 500 highly evocative images, the book celebrates the passion for tennis that exists around the world. Powell’s extraordinary images capture the character and brilliance of the greatest players in the game today and are complemented by the words of many of the game’s legendary greats of yesteryear, among them John McEnroe, Billie Jean King, Steffi Graf, Boris Becker, and Rod Laver. From superstar players, veterans, and juniors to the spectating cognoscenti and tennis haute couture; from screaming coaches, businesslike trainers, and long-suffering officials to the players’ boxes, real fans, and “fan fashion”; from the intimate details of hands-on racquets and the wiping of brows to the textures of clay, grass, and hard court, A Game to Love is a luscious and original visual tribute to one of today’s most-watched and most-loved sports.Praise for A Game to Love:”a love letter to tennis. . . What is usually obliterated by the pace of the game is restored to us by Powell’s lush frames and a selection of quotes from players past and present.” -Publishers Weekly”A Game to Love highlights Powell’s ability to capture not only the breathtaking scenery, but the elegance, emotion and art of the human body in action.” -Tennis Magazine  |

A Journey from Darkness to Light: Native Literature; A Novel of Passion, Art, Love, Science, Spirituality, Nature, Meditation, Survival, and what’s beyond all that… $13.06 Why does knowledge make us see things we don’t want to see? Why does it make us suffer more than it makes us happy? Why do we exist in a world with dominating curses more than blessings? Why can’t we define the true meaning of happiness, and barely smell its odor? When are we going to finally start asking the right questions? Why are we down here on this planet, asked to seek perfection in an imperfect world? What was the true reason behind making Prophet Adam eat from the forbidden tree? When do artists finally reach their point of perfection? If human beings, animals and insects have their own psychology, what about other creatures among which are invisible ones? Not all explanations are mentioned in books… But till when will we have questions without any answers?Searching for a way, some souls ask: Why does darkness exist, while light seems endless? We search for the key chain, while we don’t even know which door is the right one! But, who’s she; who astonished his life, captured the sundered pieces of his heart, and brought him the keys to tons of buried secrets… the one who didn’t fear touching his wounds, and the one who anticipated all his moves? Some masts are old enough to be one of the antiques the sea carries or swallows, yet it still supports the deck, controls the ship, and above its towering apex, it guides the captain… It’s still a lively organ in the giant space of the sea. He stood there, his body straight and solid as a mast, while erecting from such bemusements… with the strength of a sailor, the knowledge of a captain and the vision of an artist, he sailed for his journey, toward the endless seas of the Universe… |

January 29, 1893. ‘THHE funeral services of Miss Ingersoll, obeying her own instructions, were of a quiet and simple character. They began with a brief prayer by her pastor, Rev. Charles Brown Elder, at the Invalid’s Home, where she had passed her last days. At this service many of her dearest friends and relatives were gathered together, who came to take a last look at the familiar face. The body was then taken to the Unitarian Church, where a large number of friends and acquaintances were assembled, despite the very stormy weather which prevailed. As the coffin was borne up the aisle of the church by the bearers, Mr. J. R. Deal, General S. G. Griffin, Messrs. Horatio Colony, George H. Tilden, R. H. Porter, and Dr. B. T. Olcutt, the organist, Mrs. H. M. Doolittle, played a sweet and tender voluntary. When the music had ceased, the pastor read the following Scripture selections. SCRIPTURE SELECTIONS. We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away ; blessed be the name of the Lord. All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God endureth forever. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him; for he knoweth our frame, he remem- bereth that we are dust. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepares! a table before me in the pr… |

A Most Ingenious Paradox: The Art of Gilbert and Sullivan $30 Written more than a century ago and initially regarded even by their creators as nothing more than light entertainment, the fourteen operas of Gilbert & Sullivan emerged over the course of the twentieth century as the world’s most popular body of musical-theater works, ranking second only to Shakespeare in the history of English-language theater. Despite this resounding popularity and proven longevity, most books written about the duo have focused on the authors rather than the works. With this detailed examination of all fourteen operas, Gayden Wren fills this void. His bold thesis finds the key to the operas’ longevity, not in the clever lyrics, witty dialogue, or catchy music, but in the central themes underlying the characters and stories themselves. Like Shakespeare’s comedies, Wren shows, the operas of Gilbert & Sullivan endure because of their timeless themes, which speak to audiences as powerfully now as they did the first time they were performed.Written out of an abiding love for the Savoy operas, this volume is essential reading for any devotee of these enchanting works, or indeed for anyone who loves musical theater. |

A Synoptic History of Classical Rhetoric $57.95 The purpose of history is to help people understand the present by providing a sense of continuity to their lives. The history of western civilization begins in Ancient Greece. So much of what we observe around us — art, architecture, poetry, drama, and political systems — is derived from the Greeks. Even religious beliefs and beliefs about the solar system emanate from the writings of Greek and Roman philosophers. Writing itself is a phenomenon of Greek civilization. Students seeking to understand the social impact of technologies such as writing, print, and television, must begin their study with figures such as Socrates, who was one of the first to be concerned with the changes in social interaction and consciousness wrought by the emergence of writing on portable material. For students of language, an awareness of the classical world is particularly important. The study of human discourse is an entirely western phenomenon. As far as one can judge from surviving evidence, the Greeks were the only people of the ancient world who endeavored to analyze the ways in which human beings communicate with each other. Greece is, therefore, the birthplace of the art of discourse, which includes not only rhetoric, but also logic and grammar. Although many other ancient civilizations produced literature, only the Greeks produced analytic, expository treatises that attempted to discover the actual bases of human communication. Written treatises and school “systems” which allowed rhetorical discoveries to be transmitted to others enabled the Greeks and later the Romans to amass a considerable body of precepts to guide speakers and writers. This body of precepts forms the basis for the study of “rhetoric” — the art of human discourse. This book provides a clear understanding of the classical roots of rhetoric. While no single volume can account for every idea developed by the ancients on the art of rhetoric, this book seeks to present the concepts that |

Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do! $23.79 Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do! is a remarkable creation by the author and artist to teach a specific mode of art which uses the Elements of Design: color, line, shape, space, texture and value, Not realistically rendered this form of art is called nonrepresentational or nonobjective art. Poems and painting, thoughts from the author and aardvark and suggested exercises teach that the images stand on their own as Elements of Design. Although, you may see an aardvark as the author did. Judy O’Toole-Freel and Mirle Freel have been on a lifelong quest of creative expression. They have channeled this love through writing, the visual arts and equestrian riding and training. Although well acquainted with horses, the author has met only one aardvark and that was at a zoo. Recently she met her second aardvark through her playful imagination. While absorbed with one of the images you will find in the art book and pondering the Elements of Design that embody this mode of expression, she saw an aardvark and a redhead staring at each other. From this interpretation and use of her imagination evolved the art book, Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do!The book encourages the use of the imagination and self-expression through twelve poems paired with twelve paintings in an adventure to become enlightened about nonrepresentational art. Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do! is fun for all to cultivate visual literacy. It is a fundamental teaching tool to be used at home and at school in art classes and libraries. Also galleries, museums, gift shops and bookstores will want to put this superlative art book on their shelves for children and adults alike to enter the world of aesthetics through art and poetry. Plato put it well, “Art education brings grace to the body and nobility to the mind”. |

Abstract Expressionism (Movements in Modern Art Series) $3.99 The term Abstract Expressionism, though rejected by some of the artists involved, has come to signify the fascinating body of work made by American artists in postwar New York, mainly between 1947 and 1953. Artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning created large-scale canvases that revitalized contemporary art in America. Although inspired to some extent by the Surrealists and by European abstract painting, Abstract Expressionism was hailed as the first truly American modern art movement, and was to have enormous influence on the activities of artists in Europe and the rest of the world. In addition to 60 color illustrations of works created by the artists of the movement, this accessible survey examines the critical response to Abstract Expressionism from the time of its heyday up until the present day.Author Bio: Debra Bricker Balken is an independent curator and writer specializing in modern and contemporary art. Her publications include The Park Avenue Cubists, Arthur Dove: A Retrospective, and Philip Guston’s Poem-Pictures. |

Affirmations and Refusals, 1950-1956 $31.66 No American art critic has been more influential than Clement Greenberg. The high priest of ”formalism, ” he set in motion an approach to art that has remained prevalent for nearly half a century. . . . In much the same way that Jackson Pollock elevated American painting to international renown, Mr. Greenberg is the first American art critic whose work can be put on the shelf next to Roger Fry, Charles Baudelaire and other great European critics. –Deborah Soloman, New York Times His work was so much a part of the dynamics of American culture between, roughly, the end of World War II and the mid-Sixties that it can”t be ignored. No American art critic has produced a more imposing body of work: arrogant, clear, and forceful, a permanent rebuke to the jargon and obscurantism that bedeviled art criticism in his time and still does now. –Robert Hughes, New York Review of Books |

After Fellini $28.6 Over the past twenty-five years, Italy’s film industry has produced a remarkable number of award-winning international art-house hits, among them Cinema Paradiso and Life Is Beautiful. Despite these successes, Italian cinema is in a state of crisis: ticket sales for domestic films, which plummeted in the l980’s, are only now beginning to recover; television deregulation has engendered a popular culture largely dependent on American programming; and the passing of an entire generation of brilliant auteurs–Rossellini, Viscounti, Pasolini, Antonioni, and Fellini–extinguished the revolutionary impulse which had characterized Italian filmmaking since the Second World War.In After Fellini, Millicent Marcus contends that in the late 1980s and 1990s, a new wave of Italian filmmakers has transcended these obstacles and reasserted Italy’s importance in world cinema. Through in-depth critiques of such acclaimed films as The Last Emperor, Caro Diario, and Stolen Children, as well as the immensely popular Cinema Paradiso and Life Is Beautiful, Marcus details how today’s auteurs have both reflected and resisted Italy’s shifting social, political, and cultural identity, and created a body of work that signals a new beginning for Italian cinema. |

Alfred Stieglitz at Lake George $95.02 For more than a decade before World War I, Alfred Stieglitz lent much of his formidable energy to his public career as an editor, publisher, proselytizer, and art dealer. In the 1920s and 30s, he turned again to his own photography, exploring his personal world at Lake George, in the Adirondack mountains of New York, where he spent summers at a family farmhouse. He photographed the things around him — the landscape, the clouds overhead, the intimate life he led with family and friends, including Georgia O’Keefe, Waldo Frank, and Paul Rosenfeld. This body of work, radical and private, is the essential aspect of Stieglitz’s achievement as a photographer, and has nowhere else been published as a coherent whole. |

Along Navajo Trails: Recollections Of A Trader 1898-1948 $19 Will Evans’s writings should find a special niche in the small but significant body of literature from and about traders to the Navajos. Evans was the proprietor of the Shiprock Trading Company. Probably more than most of his fellow traders, he had a strong interest in Navajo culture. The effort he made to record and share what he learned certainly was unusual. He published in the Farmington and New Mexico newspapers and other periodicals, compiling many of his pieces into a book manuscript. His subjects were Navajos he knew and traded with, their stories of historic events such as the Long Walk, and descriptions of their culture as he, an outsider without academic training, understood it. Evans’s writings were colored by his fondness for, uncommon access to, and friendships with Navajos, and by who he was: a trader, folk artist, and Mormon. He accurately portrayed the operations of a trading post and knew both the material and artistic value of Navajo crafts. His art was mainly inspired by Navajo sandpainting. He appropriated and, no doubt, sometimes misappropriated that sacred art to paint surfaces and objects of all kinds. As a Mormon, he had particular views of who the Navajos were and what they believed and was representative of a large class of often-overlooked traders. Much of the Navajo trade in the Four Corners region and farther west was operated by Mormons. They had a significant historical role as intermediaries, or brokers, between Native and European American peoples in this part of the West. Well connected at the center of that world, Evans was a good spokesperson. |

An Economy of Colour $123.67 The contributors to this volume analyze visual culture in the context of British and French Colonial activity in the North Atlantic from 1660-1830. It is a response to a noticeable omission in current art history and cultural studies, which have largely ignored the diverse and important body of visual imagery relating to colonialism, Atlantic slavery and the development of racial ideology. This fascinating collection demonstrates that the visualization of individuals, communities, social types, fictive characters, artefacts and landscapes, played a highly significant role in both the European representation and self-representation of the peoples and places of the Atlantic colonial world. Consequently, it reasserts the primacy of visual culture as an active participant in forming this complex and fluid imagined community. |

An Intellectual History Of The Caribbean $32 The first intellectual history of the Caribbean written by a top Caribbean studies scholar, this book examines both writings penned by natives of the region as well as a body of texts interpretive of the region produced by Western authors. Stressing the experiential and cultural particularity of the Caribbean, the study considers four major questions: What art, literature or thought can come from the minds of people who have undergone a catastrophic history? What makes the conceptual paradigms fashioned by the Western intellectual industry capable of illuminating the distinct experience of Antilleans, but not vice versa? Do Antilleans lack the intellectual history required for the interpretation of culture, whether in their region or elsewhere in the world? Why is the specificity of Caribbean humanity such that it cannot be used as a paradigm for humanity as a whole? |

Anatomy of Body Worlds: Critical Essays on the Plastinated Cadavers of Gunther von Hagens $39.98 Since its Tokyo debut in 1995, Gunther von Hagens’ Body Worlds exhibition has been visited by more than 25 million people at museums and science centers across North America, Europe, and Asia. Preserved through von Hagens’ unique process of plastination, the bodies shown in the controversial exhibit are posed to mimic life and art, from a striking re-creation of Rodin’s The Thinker, to a preserved horse and its human rider, a basketball player, and a reclining pregnant woman—complete with fetus in its eighth month. This interdisciplinary volume analyzes Body Worlds from a number of perspectives, describing the legal, ethical, sociological, and religious concerns which seem to accompany the exhibition as it travels the world. |

Ancient Technology $17 Since ancient times, technological advances have increased man’s chances for survival. From the practicality of a Roman aqueduct to the art of the written word, man has always adapted his environment to meet his needs, and to provide himself with sustenance, comfort, leisure, a higher quality of living, and a thriving culture. This concise reference source takes a closer look at six technological events that significantly impacted the evolution of civilization, from the Palaeolithic age to the height of the Roman Empire. As he touches on the common elements of ancient technology-energy, machines, mining, metallurgy, ceramics, agriculture, engineering, transportation, and communication-Humphrey asks questions central to understanding the impact of ancient tools on the modern world: What prompts change? What cultural traditions inhibit change? What effect do these changes have on their societies and civilization? Humphrey explores technologies as both physical tools and as extensions of the human body, beginning with the invention of the Greek alphabet and including such accomplishments as early Neolithic plant cultivation, the invention of coinage, the building of the Parthenon, and Rome’s urban water system. Detailed line drawings of tools and machines make ancient mechanics more easily accessible. Primary documents, glossary, biographies, and a timeline dating from the Palaeolithic age to the Roman Empire round out the work, making this an ideal reference source for understanding the tools of the ancient world. |

Ancient Visions $21.95 The Bighorn and Wind River basins of north-central Wyoming and southern Montana have been home to Native American tribes for at least 11,000 years and contain some of the most diverse assemblages of hunter-gatherer rock art anywhere in the world. Most notable are the spectacular and surreal images of the Dinwoody tradition, but there is also a startling array of other forms from shield-bearing warriors to animals, plants, and abstract images. Ancient Visions presents a sampling of these wonderful rock art figures. The authors show how this ancient imagery can be integrated with the archaeological record. Modern advances in rock-art dating techniques allow them to begin the process of incorporating image styles with archaeological chronologies. The result is a new approach that offers a much different archaeological picture of the ancient Bighorn and Wind River basins. Ancient Visions, now available in paperback, is the first book to fully consider and present this stunning body of ancient art. |

Andy Warhol $1.99 Andy Warhol was famous for being famous, but his body of work reveals a unique understanding of America’s starmaking machinery. Isabel Kuhl looks at the world Warhol inhabited as a young man-a post-war America on the brink of mass commercialism and mass production-to examine his iconic paintings and prints. She demonstrates how Warhol’s fascination with pop culture meshed perfectly with a cultural mood at once reflective and rebellious. The innovative layout allows the artist’s brilliantly colored prints and paintings spring to life, while photographs from Warhol’s life in and out of the limelight offer a balanced appreciation of an artist who taught his audience how to appreciate his art. |

Andy Warhol 365 Takes: The Andy Warhol Museum Collection $32.5 Andy Warhol was one of the most compelling figures of the 20th-century art world whose body of work transformed the landscape of contemporary art. He was also a notorious collector who saved practically everything that came his way. In 1994, seven years after the artist’s death, The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh became the repository not only for a substantial body of his artwork and films, but also for the Time Capsules into which he obsessively deposited a lifetime’s worth of ephemera and personal memorabilia. For this book—created in the same format as Abrams’ best-selling Earth From Above: 365 Days—the museum has gathered highlights of its collection. Illustrated with almost 400 objects, from paintings to party invitations, the volume also features lively commentaries by the museum’s staff as well as quotes from Warhol’s own irreverent writings. Timed to coincide with the celebration of the museum’s 10-year anniversary, this book will serve as both an introduction to and a handbook for the most extensive collection anywhere of this iconic artist’s work. |

Angelic Mistakes: The Art of Thomas Merton $0.08 In the last decade of his life, while living as a hermit-monk in dialogue with the world, Thomas Merton created a body of visual art that has remained largely unknown and little studied in the nearly forty years since his death. With this book, Merton’s art at last moves out of the shadows to be appreciated for what it is: a revealing expression of his state of mind and heart in the 1960s, and a visual correlative to his mature works of spiritual writing such as New Seeds of Contemplation and Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander. Roger Lipsey provides a fascinating analysis of the simple and striking images and their significance in Merton’s journey. He find in them resonances with Asian calligraphy and American abstract expressionism, and relates them to the influence of Merton’s wide circle of friends, which included such diverse figures as the Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain, the poet Czeslaw Milosz, the Zen scholar D. T. Suzuki, and the artist Ad Reinhardt—among many others. But the centerpiece of the book is the art itself, presented in a portfolio of thirty-four representative pieces that reflect the changing themes and methods of Merton’s work. Each is accompanied by selections from his writings from the 1960s that reflect the inward and outward territories Merton was exploring in the period when these remarkable images were created. |

Antonin Artaud: Teminal Curses $9.79 The work of Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) remains a constant source of seminal inspiration, astonishment and provocation across contemporary visual art, film, performance, choreography, digital media, and critical theory, throughout the world. In ARTAUD: TERMINAL CURSES, Stephen Barber explores the newly-revealed set of 406 notebooks which Artaud used in the final years of his life in Paris, after his release from a decade of asylum-incarceration, to carry through his projects for corporeal transformation and social refusal. Artaud’s notebooks are designed as an autonomous work in their own right, through which he distils his pre-eminent preoccupations: the envisioning of a new, organ-less human anatomy (crucial for Deleuze and Guattari’s theoretical work), his conception of the time and space of gesture, his raw fury against society and all of its manifestations, his visualization of a ruined and supplanted natural and urban world, his intensive confrontation between text and image, and his reflections on the fluctuating parameters of life and death. Those preoccupations retrospectively illuminate Artaud’s earlier Surrealist work and theories of film and performance. This eye-opening and original university-level text will be of major significance for all readers interested in the extreme zones of art, literature and media, as well providing critical new revelations for those engaged with Artaud’s work.Stephen Barber is a leading authority on Artaud’s work, and author of “Artaud: The Screaming Body” and “Artaud: Blows and Bombs”. |

Arsenic and Old Paint: An Art Lover’s Mystery $0.7 Former art forger Annie Kincaid has been operating a legitimate decorative painting business for quite a while, but memories are long in the art world. Now, with the blessing of the FBI Art Squad, Annie’s using her underworld connections to boost her new art investigation business, where she’s partnered with none other than ex-art thief/ love interest Michael X. Johnson. At first it’s strictly business, but when she stumbles across a body in an exclusive Nob Hill men’s club, and an insurance adjuster asks and an insurance adjuster asks her to find a stolen (and forged) erotic painting, and then her Uncle Anton is attacked, Annie’s on the trail of more than just art. This time, she’s looking for justice. Annie is a strong woman protagonist. She has reinvented herself from a checkered past as an art forger to a legitimate businesswoman/artist. She moves easily between high and low social circles. as she makes the rounds of San Francisco and Bay Area locales, including tunnels beneath the pavements of Nob Hill and Chinatown; the homes and hideouts-even a downtown sex club-of the rich and famous; and the artists’ studios South of Market. The Art Lover’s series has an entertaining light touch, especially when either of Annie Kincaid’s two romantic interests appear. But Arsenic and Old Paint also deals with serious social issues- some history of slave trading in Chinatown, and its connection with San Francisco powers-that-were; and the male exploitation of the female and immigrant powerless, an issue that continues to this day. |

Art In The Cinematic Imagination $26.39 Bringing an art historical perspective to the realm of American and European film, Art in the Cinematic Imagination examines the ways in which films have used works of art and artists themselves as cinematic and narrative motifs. From the use of portraits in Vertigo to the cinematic depiction of women artists in Artemisia and Camille Claudel, Susan Felleman incorporates feminist and psychoanalytic criticism to reveal individual and collective perspectives on sex, gender, identity, commerce, and class.Probing more than twenty films from the postwar era through contemporary times, Art in the Cinematic Imagination considers a range of structurally significant art objects, artist characters, and art-world settings to explore how the medium of film can amplify, reinvent, or recontextualize the other visual arts. Fluently speaking across disciplines, Felleman’s study brings a broad array of methodologies to bear on questions such as the evolution of the Hollywood Love Goddess and the pairing of the feminine with death on screen.A persuasive approach to an engaging body of films, Art in the Cinematic Imagination illuminates a compelling and significant facet of the cinematic experience. |

Art Practice as Research: Inquiry in the Visual Arts $143 “F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said that the test of a ‘first rate intelligence’ is ‘the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind and still retain the ability to function.’In this book, his magnum opus, artist and scholar Graeme Sullivan shows us a first rate mind at work. He convincingly straddles the often wide gaps between art and science, mind and body, research and practice, teaching and doing, traditional and postmodern views of education and of art, creative and critical thinking. Indeed, as his enigmatic title indicates, he is actually able to keep three usually disparate concepts-art, research, and practice-in mind at the same time. Through his skilled use of compelling sidebars and apt illustrations, Sullivan shows that he can practice what he preaches. I have been arguing with and learning from Graeme for thirty years and am grateful that he has the opportunity to share his provocative ideas and insights with a wider readership. Indeed, whether or not we agree with every contention, he heightens our own intelligences.” -Howard Gardner, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Author of Five Minds for the Future Substantially updated and revised, Art Practice as Research, Second Edition presents a compelling theory that the creative and cultural inquiry undertaken by artists is a form of research. Sullivan argues that legitimate research goals can be achieved by choosing different methods than those offered by the social sciences.. Artists emphasize the role of the imaginative intellect in creating, criticizing, and constructing knowledge that is not only new but also has the capacity to transform human understanding. New to this Edition Two new chapters explore debates surrounding art practice as research and projects undertaken within the art world, community, and institutional settings. New, expanded sections make reference to the work of over fifty |

Art Reproduction Oil Painting – Shard with Black Satin Frame – Eco Friendly – 29 X 41 – Hand Painted Framed Canvas Art $355 Enjoy a print of this bloody deconstruction of kitsch art. Reproduced from a high-quality photograph, this print maintains the detail and visceral power of the original piece. It depicts a torn and mangled painted canvas that has been splattered with red paint. This photograph was created in the premiere episode of second season of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. The artist was tasked with elevating a piece of kitsch art into high art. The artist evokes a sense of violence and awe through the use of a desecrated painted canvas. Her use of sharp angles jutting outward conveys an internalized aggression. Its macabre presentation of a once kitsch painting elevates this piece to a definite conversation starter. Kathryn lives in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Yale University. At Yale, Kathryn developed her style and voice into something truly unique, beautiful and organic. She is known as the photographer who builds and photographs things concerning the body/human condition and the medical world. She’s smart, focused and she has always ripped through or torn apart anything standing in [her] way to make art. Frame Description: Black Satin Frame – Eco Friendly |

Art and Sex $74.71 This “no-holds barred” volume surveys the vast array of images of sex and sexuality in contemporary art, finding sex in some surprising places and drawing some fascinating conclusions. Working outwards from the individual to the world Gray Watson looks at the focus on the body in contemporary art and at the important contributions of the feminist and queer art movements, moving on to uncover sex in the city, sex in nature, sex in the sacred and even sex in cyberspace. The artworks discussed range from playful, even “romantic” work by artists such as Carolee Schneeman, Yayoi Kusama and Sylvie Fleury to darker and more overt work by artists as different as Kiki Smith and Kenneth Anger. Looking into representations of “taboo” sexualities including voyeurism and sado-masochism Watson also discovers the surprising absence of “the missionary position” in contemporary art. |
